Wear Evaluation of Sequentially Crosslinked UHMWPE when subjected to Metal Debris

ثبت نشده
چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Metal on metal bearings exhibit a biphasic wear mode, starting with a ‘bedding-in’ period of higher wear followed by a lower steady wear which may have favorable total wear [1]. However, there are cases of ‘run-away’ wear resulting in significantly higher total wear for the metal on metal bearing [2,3]. Many of these ‘run-away’ cases need to be revised which brings up the following question: does any remaining metal debris have an effect on the performance of the new implant? Therefore, the main objective of this study was to characterize the wear performance of sequentially crosslinked polyethylene against metal and ceramic femoral heads in the presence of metal debris.

Failure of a metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty from progressive osteolysis.

Ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear, debris-induced osteolysis is a frequent cause of failure of total hip arthroplasty. Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty eliminates the generation of UHMWPE particulate debris. Although the volumetric wear of a metal-on-metal articulation may be lower than a metal-UHMWPE articulation, the number of particles may be higher. Osteolysis can ...

Polyethylene Wear Debris From a Knee Simulator Model: Effect of Crosslinking and Counterface Material

INTRODUCION: Improved wear resistance of crosslinked UHMWPE has been well demonstrated in both hip and knee [1-4]. A reduction of 70% can be shown in knee simulators from conventional crosslinked tibial inserts (CXPE) gamma-irradiated at 3.5Mrad to 7Mrad highly crosslinked inserts (HXPE). Hip simulator models indicated that debris size decreased with increased crosslinking [5]. In the knee it h...

Properties of crosslinked ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.

Substantially reducing the rate of generation of wear particles at the surfaces of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) orthopedic implant bearing components, in vivo, is widely regarded as one of the most formidable challenges in modern arthroplasty. In the light of this, much research attention has been paid to the myriad of endogenous and exogenous factors that have been postula...

Hip Microscopy Morphology MORPHOLOGY OF WEAR PARTICLES OF HEAVILY CROSS LINKED POLYETHYLENE

Introduction The orthopaedic industry has expended significant research effort in recent years in reducing wear of UHMWPE articulating surface components. One such approach has been in the development of a heavily crosslinked polyethylene. Crosslinking for long has been known to improve the wear resistance of industrial polyethylene. Clinical experience for over 20 years and an increasing magni...

Wear of Crosslinked Uhmwpe in a Hip Joint Simulator

Crosslinking has been extensively introduced to reduce the wear of UHMWPE. In this study the wear rates and wear surfaces of UHMWPE with different levels of crosslinking were compared in a hip joint simulator. The UHMWPE was either non-irradiated, gamma irradiated in air (2.5MRad), or highly crosslinked (7.5 and 10MRad). The intentionally crosslinked materials showed a significantly lower volum...
